Helmet - International Typographic Style

Postby bornannoying » Sun Jun 24, 2012 9:40 am

Found a site for a guy who remakes band flyers in the International Typographic Style, which I'm quite a fan of. Some really nice designs in there, from Husker Du to Refused to Melvins... and Helmet. Unfortunately the Helmet one isn't the nicest design, but still... Figured at least LandIt would be into this.

Of course, I have an appreciation, BA! This certainly interest the graphic designer side of me. The Helmet attempt isn't the best of the series, I agree, but it's great that the band is part of the concept. I think he was influenced by this blog or the contents of...

If artsy-fartsy discussion of Franz Kline's dark slabs of paint can emote some visual version of Helmet, I think stark geometric shapes, colors and typography can imply something about their music as well. Think dry charts and graphs with the lyrics to FBLA!

I'd agree... but where was this discussion of Franz Kline and Helmet? I can see that connection, especially with the earlier stuff like Strap It On.

Thanks for the link, that stuff's jaw dropping. I love it. I wish it wasn't so rare to see design that makes you go "wow".

@eht: at I first thought LandIt might have been posing a rhetorical "if", but now I think about it I'm sure there was a discussion about parallels with modern art. I'm thinking Rothko might've come up... wonder if it was the old forum. Or my imagination.

Yeah, now that I think about it I think that discussion did take place, and I'm pretty sure I was part of it. I almost mentioned Rothko this time, too, ironically.

It may have been on the older official site forums. Wasn't that where we had that long and entertaining thread about religion that Chris Traynor even told you he'd been enjoying reading? Ahh, the good old days.

Ah yes, the religion thread. You're right, I remember that too. How things have changed.

The art discussion is buried here or the old style forum and I even tried to look it up the other day to prove to myself I wasn't making it up. Anyway, good art ramblings are nice to have among topics like how to poop at work.

Yeah, so that forum was started when Page signed up with Interscope to do Helmet 2.0, and Size Matters was announced, if I recall correctly. So early 2004? And then we were there until moving here in September 2006 (judging by our registration dates) to coincide with the move to Warcon for Monochrome. Wow, time flies...

Ah yes, the "How to poop at work" thread. Another "classic".

Yeah, that timeline sounds about right. If you want to re-live the old days, check out the Wayback Machine. Unfortunately I haven't found any individual forum posts in there (yet), but nonetheless it's a fun trip down memory lane.

Cool, thanks. Yeah, I've tinkered a little bit with the Wayback Machine before, but not tried it for the old Helmet forums.

Since we were reminiscing a little in this thread, thought I'd drop this here.

This forum is like a ghost town now. Tumbleweeds rolling across it, coyotes howling in the distance...

Guess back then Quicksand wasn't nearly as famous as they are now so such a typo could just happen.
BTW, I hope they're coming here for a few reunion shows.
