21st Century Jesus... i need your help

Postby Poison Pimp » Thu Feb 08, 2007 6:19 pm

Dude,

Michael from here has sent me bunch of VHS tapes so I could put them on DVD and divX movies for the fans... Also, he asked me to send you DVDs so you could do your magic on them (video and mix) but I have a problem. I am not sure how to solve this.

- a one hour VHS movie ends up taking more than 12 Gigs of space on my hard drive. This means I'm going to end up transferring easily 70 Gigs of uncompressed videos to my computer. There is no way I can put all this on DVDs (about 20). Or should I?
- Should I compress the videos to a format that you would like? I tried mpeg2 and it reduced the size to 2.5 gigs.
- Should we invest in a harddrive (the one you shipped to the US for the last DVD you worked on) and I transfer all the uncompressed videos on it for you?

- if we decide to compress the video to a suitable format, can you give me advices on how to make it that I do not have any "lines" appearing? It's like everything looks fuzzy. I wonder if this is what interlacing is? Would you recomment me some good setup to make a video look perfect once compressed?

- about the sound. Some of these videos have a relatively good sound. I have played a little bit with SoundForge 8 and boosted the bass a little bit. I've done it on one video already (Houston 05/16/1993) and it sounds badass, but I think you would be better than me at that. If I sent you the lossless sound file, would you agree to remix it to the proper levels?

I need help! haha

hey
late reply cause I was in hospital for the last 7 days and will stay there for parts of the next week (no worries, just a chronical illness, im used to that nonsense)
anything else below DV avi (which is the 12BG per hour thing) is compressed. DVD compression is rather light but still fucks things up a bit. I wouldnt mind doin a HD transfer and would send it back earlier than mr cabbage :) invest into a HD? I dont have any empty ones atm, plus its you whose got the data... hmm, what country are you in anyways? if you have use for an 80GB HD then this might be a good one to buy if you have to and theyve become pretty cheap afaik, like 30Euro or whatever, outta loop with prices...

lines appearing: now this is difficult to say, it may have multiple causes. are these tapes from the US? if so they'll prolly be NTSC, and that means you either have an NTSC compatible VHS player AND recording device, or your picture will be fubar, but that means it looks like damaged all the way.
horizontal lines accross the screen are a rather known phenomenon, and depending on how they re caused... I can particularly repair that kinda stuff, I'll see about it.

would be best if you made some small samples of each show like 10-30seconds and quality-good enough for that I can see whats goin on error-wise, small quicktime, WMV or VCD f.ex. and let me see those, so I'll be able to tell you what I can do about what.
talk to you hopefully mid next week.

Yeah, I was thinking that we should go with an 80 Gigs HD. If it's $30 only, I might be able to get one cheaper on Ebay anyway.

Now that I know what you need (uncompressed video), I'll just do that.

I recommend you to buy a used one off evilBay and deep-scan it for remaining credit card data and stuff like that, with a little luck you end up with even more money than you paid  .

This will be so terrific, doesn't matter if it takes a while. As long as it doesn't turn into an urban myth like the 2005 Falls Church Helmet DVD ;) .

So a little update here. I have so far transferred three more VHS shows to DV AVI format for 21st Century's remastering. I have copied all these files to DVDs and am planning to mail them over soon (total 5 shows).

And there are more shows to transfer!

hey yo... gonna mail you back finally, that one kept gettin forgotten...

I've been tryin to do the same remastering thing with that bogart DVD but it totally went insane, like the audio was taken outta sync everywhere. which not cool cause with 20GB of data laying around somewhere, such projects cant stay around on the HD forever. I guess I'll be able to fix that sorta crap sometime and also work with DVD sources properly, but for now I'm even more into workin with a good old avi source:)
