Milwaukee '97 and remastered 1994-11-22 show on FTP

Postby Ruoska » Tue Oct 31, 2006 10:14 am

I'm uploading as we speak, so it'll be there in an hour or so.

I got a terrific sounding '97 Milwaukee show from Zomb, I converted it into 160kbps WMA so people can actually listen to it on their mp3 players (and dont have to download a thousand megs for a show!).

Also I remastered the 94-11-22 unknown venue show cos it was just all bass and boom, now it's nice and listenable. They're both in the upload directory.

If song 10, Ironhead, on the Milwaukee show is screwed up lemme know cos I broke connection there and I dunno how well it resumed mid-song. It wouldn't let me delete the song so I had to try resuming.

Shows are both in WMA 160kpbs as I find it makes no compromise with sound quality and yet remains pretty fast to download.

It sounds amazing!!! :)

There is a glitch at the beginning of the #10 song, so I deleted it for you, so you can reupload it.

Hmm, for some reason it had broke when I went back to work. Well, I set the transfer up again, so the other show will be there soon too. I'll also reupload 10-Ironhead for the Milwaukee show =)

I guess I could remaster some of the other shows too but I only do shows that I feel are good but need it, in this case because this show had lots of rare songs like The Silver Hawaiian and especially Pariah. Most of the live recordings out there have the same songs over and over again, so why not just listen to the Grand Olympic show as atleast it has professional sound quality =) Man I'd like more shows from '93-'95. Are there any other recordings of that early version of I Know than that one crap sounding one?

Also I can only really remaster shows that sound boomy and stuff, where I just EQ the bass down a bit and bring up the mids and highs and match the volume to some sound board quality show. If a show sounds really thin or distorts a lot (recorded from the front row on some player with a built in mic) there really isn't anything anybody can do about it.

I assume you have explored the ftp already for old shows, right? We have plenty of 93-95 shows on it.

I have to say I'm impressed by your willingness of hosting an FTP on your own money and time, and you even called it "ours" as in "we have", instead of "yours". That's what I call true charity =)

Anyway I don't think "we" =) have a single '95 bootleg in there, yet? I hadn't noticed but the number of '93-94 shows has gone up nicely, I'll have to check on some those shows to see if any are really high quality. Soundboard / radio mixes are always a joy to listen to =)

And thanks once more for hosting the ftp, you're a champ =)

I've just compared the original 1994-11-22 show and your remastered version and this is incredible! You've done an amazing job.

I will just delete the old one and put yours instead.

And we already have the 1997 show on the ftp. It's in mp3 at 320 k/s. I don't think your version sounds better or worse, just the same, so I'll leave the mp3 version on.

Do you have it in video too? Could you create a divX of the show?

So here is the minimum needed to connect to the ftp.

It is strongly advised to install an ftp software, like WS_FTP or FlashFTP. Such a software will particularly allow you to connect without errors and also to resume your downloads if you are disconnected by mistake. This is crucial for big files.

You can download WS_FTP for free at WS_FTP-9.zip

The general login access for now is:

host: gauthy.kicks-ass.net
login: helmet
password: helmet

or directly ftp://helmet:helmet@gauthy.kicks-ass.net but it is still advised to program the login info in the ftp software.[/url]

Oh man you had it already? Sorry man, I thought I hadn't seen it there. The show I downloaded was in .flac so it was lossless, therefore took a lot of space ---> compressed into wma. No video, too bad =/ I'd love to see a video from the Grand Auditorium show..are there a lot of professionally recorded/video'd shows in existance, from any Helmet show at all? I've only seen bits from the Cologne show..

Anyway I always compress my stuff in WMA cos it sounds CD pefect at 160kbps, so one normal song would only be like 4-6 megs. The best thing about WMA is that it sounds really good at 128kbps, if you listen to it on some mp3 player with those small headphones you can't tell the difference between it and a real cd. Whereas on mp3, drums (actually the symbals, hihat, ride, crash etc) and vocals have this mechanical robot-like chime to them and it sounds really thin at 128kbps.

At 160kbps I think mp3 and wma sound pretty much the same except for some weird reason wma has teeny tiny amount of added bass..which is what everybody wants to turn up on portable players anyway so I guess that's just Microsoft's business strategy=D To win over the portable masses..

Man that's so true. Cos Helmet is such an esoteric band (can you use that word like that?) I feel this great respect for everybody else on these forums, and I never even bother writing on other bands forums at all. The small fan community we have is incredibly devoted and active! And it really revolves around your FTP, it's like this archive that stores everything Helmet and beyond =) Like some sort of secret library =D

Also a lot of people here seem to have band of their own or atleast play some instrument, it's cool!

Ahhh! The Helmet brotherhood...

Postby land it74 » Thu Nov 02, 2006 10:46 pm

That sounds corny, but I'm glad there's a fellowship here and that you guys are cool to share these live cuts. I've been addicted to the YouTube and finding the latest Helmet-related video submission is yet another thing that proves the fanbase is sturdy. Whoever you are (RM, I know you've contributed), thanks for broadcasting the band on the YouTube! While I'm at it...Jarek, it is pretty sweet that you're playing some riffs from the latest albums for us to see. It's great study material for hobby guitarist.

Peace all!

Yes, you can use "esoteric" that way, and I think that's a perfect way to say it. Totally agree on the community aspect. Come on... group hug! : )
